Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) technology represents a highly efficient fusion of biological treatment and membrane separation processes. It integrates conventional activated sludge treatment with advanced membrane filtration — typically using hollow fiber membranes — to deliver superior wastewater purification in a compact footprint.
Unlike traditional activated sludge systems that rely on secondary sedimentation tanks and tertiary filters, MBR membrane replaces these with membrane ultra/microfiltration. This directly separates solids, bacteria, and other contaminants from the treated water, producing high-quality effluent suitable for reuse (e.g., irrigation, industrial processes, or even indirect potable applications).
The Usage of MBR membrane
Submerged (Immersed/Internal)
The hollow fiber membranes are directly immersed in the bioreactor tank. This is the most common setup for municipal and industrial applications due to its energy efficiency and simplicity.
External (Sidestream)
Membranes are housed in a separate unit, requiring an intermediate pumping stage. This configuration suits specific high-strength wastewaters or retrofits.
